China to become worlds largest internet market despite scarcity of DSL expertise.
According to vnunet, China will overtake the US next year to become the world’s largest internet market. They reported that the number of broadband subscribers in China is growing at a staggering 79 per cent annually, and will reach 79 million in 2007.
Consulting firm Ovum estimates that the number of broadband connections in the US, currently the world’s largest market, is around 51 million.
Kevin Lee, a senior analyst with Ovum, pointed out an interesting difference between the two markets, “unlike the US market, where cable internet access plays an important role, DSL technology will be the key driving force for broadband growth in China. Operators are progressively upgrading the network using higher speed technology such as ADSL2+ and VDSL to meet increasing bandwidth demands”
The recruit.net china job index concurs with this, showing a high number of DSL related job openings found in the last 30 days. The main vacancies are for hardware engineers, deployment managers and R&D.

[…] Emerging broadband nations like China and India are deploying DSL as fast as they can. But not fast enough - because of some serious talent shortage. China is facing an acute shortage of DSL engineers. Recruit.net, an Asia-specific job search engine, shows 150 openings for “DSL” related jobs. 326 jobs in India. Vast.com has over 14,000 job listings under the keyword “DSL.” Interesting indications for an ongoing broadband boom… not that there is anything wrong with it. Anyway if you are a DSL dude (or DSL Diva), time to put on your traveling shoes and go find your fortunes elsewhere. […]
